The Luxury Fiber Spectrum: Merino, Cashmere, and Alpaca

Women's wool jackets in higher price ranges use fiber types beyond standard wool, and the differences are more than just softness.

Merino wool is the benchmark for fine, comfortable wool in outerwear. Its fiber diameter is small enough to be comfortable against the skin without the itchiness of coarser wool, it washes more easily than standard wool, and it retains its elasticity and shape through more wash cycles.

Cashmere comes from the undercoat of cashmere goats, primarily from Mongolia and China. It has a finer fiber diameter than merino, significantly lower weight per unit of warmth, and a distinctive softness that wool, even fine wool, does not fully replicate. Cashmere-blend jackets use cashmere mixed with merino or a small percentage of synthetic for structure, since pure cashmere is fragile enough at jacket weight to develop pilling and wear marks with hard use.

Alpaca fiber comes from alpacas, animals related to llamas and native to South America. Alpaca is naturally hypoallergenic, extremely soft, and warmer per unit of weight than wool. It has a natural lustre that gives alpaca-blend garments a subtle sheen absent from standard wool.

Structured vs. Unstructured Wool Jackets

Women's wool jackets divide into two distinct construction approaches that determine how the jacket fits and how it can be worn.

A structured wool jacket carries an internal canvas or interfacing that holds the front panels and shoulder line in a specific shape, similar to a suit jacket. This construction requires the jacket to fit at the shoulders precisely, since the internal structure determines where the shoulder falls. A structured wool jacket reads as more formal and polished, appropriate for professional and dressed-up contexts.

An unstructured wool jacket has no internal canvas. The wool fabric itself determines the drape and shape. This construction is more flexible, more forgiving of fit variation, and reads as more casual. Wrap styles, cocoon coats, and loose blazer cuts are typically unstructured.
