Long, Midi, or Plus Size: Understanding the Fit Options

A winter coat's warmth is partly a function of how much of the body it covers, and length is therefore one of the most practical decisions in choosing one.

A full-length or near-ankle coat provides the maximum coverage and warmth, covering the upper thigh and most of the leg. This is the most traditional winter coat proportion in cold climates and the most effective when temperatures drop significantly below freezing.

A midi-length coat, ending between the knee and mid-calf, balances warmth and mobility more than a full-length piece, and it is generally the most versatile length for everyday winter wear across the widest range of temperatures.

Plus size winter coats carry the same construction as standard sizing but are built with adjusted proportions rather than scaled-up from a smaller pattern, which is what ensures the shaping, lining distribution, and belt placement all work correctly at extended sizes.

Petite length options address the opposite need: adjusting the body and sleeve length so that a midi coat actually falls at the right proportion on a smaller frame rather than reading as a floor-length piece.

Leather vs. Shearling-Lined: Choosing Your Warmth Level

A leather winter coat in full-grain cowhide provides strong wind resistance along the full coat length, which is the primary way a leather coat keeps you warm: by blocking the mechanism through which cold air strips heat from the body. In dry cold with significant wind, a full-length leather coat performs well as a standalone outer layer.

A leather coat with a shearling or wool lining adds insulation to the wind resistance of the cowhide shell, trapping warm air against the body rather than relying solely on blocking cold air from getting in. This combination is appropriate for temperatures at or below freezing where wind resistance alone is insufficient.

A full shearling coat, where the entire interior is genuine sheepskin wool, provides the highest warmth level in the collection and is suited to genuinely sub-zero conditions where other options reach their limit.
