Men's Puffer Jackets
The puffer jacket traces back to 1936, when outdoor adventurer Eddie Bauer designed an insulated, quilted jacket after nearly dying of hypothermia on a fishing trip. He patented the design in 1939 under the name Skyliner, the first of its kind in the United States. Nearly a century later, the quilted baffle construction that defined that original jacket is still the standard the category is built on. Fineyst's men's puffer jackets are quilted, insulated, and finished with hooded and adjustable-cuff styles, built to layer comfortably under one of our leather jackets once temperatures drop, true to size.
A Short History of the Puffer Jacket
The puffer's origin is more specific than most outerwear categories, and worth knowing because it explains why the construction looks the way it does.
The earliest documented version dates to 1922, when Australian chemist and mountaineer George Finch wore a jacket made from balloon fabric and eiderdown during a British Mount Everest expedition, built for warmth at altitude rather than fashion. The design that actually launched the category commercially came over a decade later. In 1936, Eddie Bauer, after a near-fatal hypothermia scare when his wool jacket became waterlogged on a fishing trip, designed a quilted jacket insulated with goose down. He patented it in 1939 as the Skyliner, the first patented down jacket in the U.S.
The same construction principle, quilted baffles that hold insulation evenly across the body rather than letting it shift and bunch, has remained the technical foundation of the category ever since, even as the jacket moved from outdoor performance gear into mainstream fashion through the 1970s, 80s, and beyond.
How Quilted Baffle Construction Works
The defining feature of a puffer jacket isn't the insulation itself, it's how that insulation is contained.
Loose insulation packed into a jacket without structure would shift, settle, and leave cold spots within a few wears. The solution, developed almost from the category's inception, is to stitch the outer and inner shell fabric together into a grid of compartments, called baffles, that keep the fill evenly distributed across the garment. Sewn-through baffles, where the stitching passes directly through both shell layers, are the simpler and more common construction, used in lighter, less bulky jackets. Box-baffle construction uses an internal wall of fabric between the layers to create a true three-dimensional chamber, which allows for more fill and less heat loss at the seams, typically found in heavier, more technical pieces.
Fineyst's men's puffer jackets use quilted baffle construction to keep the insulation distributed evenly, with hooded options and adjustable cuffs to seal out wind at the extremities, where heat loss happens fastest.
Layering a Puffer Jacket with Leather
One advantage of the puffer's quilted, compressible construction is how easily it layers with structured outerwear, rather than competing with it for space.
Worn underneath one of Fineyst's leather jackets, a puffer adds a genuine layer of warmth without the bulk a heavier coat would introduce, since the quilted construction compresses rather than fights against a fitted leather silhouette. This makes a puffer a practical addition to a leather-centered wardrobe for the coldest weeks of the year, rather than a separate winter coat that replaces what you already wear the rest of the season.
