The distinction between a coat and a jacket comes down primarily to length, and length in cold weather is thermal rather than aesthetic.

A jacket typically ends at or above the hip. A coat extends past the hip, ranging from mid-thigh to knee-length to full-length below the calf. The additional coverage across the upper thigh accounts for meaningful heat retention that a jacket-length piece cannot provide, since the upper leg is one of the most effective areas of the body for losing warmth to cold air, especially in wind.

A winter coat specifically is designed for the coldest conditions in a given climate, meaning it should function as a standalone outer layer in the temperatures you actually experience, rather than requiring multiple layers to approximate adequate warmth.

What Warmth Do You Actually Need?

Before choosing a winter coat, it helps to know what temperature range you are actually buying for, since the warmest option is not always the most practical.

For temperatures above 30 degrees Fahrenheit, most leather coats and trench coats provide adequate warmth as a standalone outer layer, particularly in low wind.

For temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees Fahrenheit, a leather coat with a wool or shearling lining provides appropriate warmth at rest and in moderate wind.

Shearling-lined leather coats add a wool or shearling interior to a leather outer shell, combining the wind resistance of cowhide with the insulating density of fixed natural wool. This is the warmest combination Fineyst offers.
