The biker jacket's design hasn't changed much since Irving Schott built the first one for Schott NYC in 1928 — and that's by design. The original Perfecto was cut close and slightly cropped, tailored to a rider's body so excess fabric wouldn't catch or bunch while leaning over a motorcycle. That cropped, fitted proportion is still the more traditional read on the biker jacket today, and it's the silhouette most people picture first.

A classic-length biker jacket — sitting closer to the hip — trades some of that original tailoring for versatility. It layers more easily over sweaters and works better as an outer layer through colder months, while keeping the same asymmetric zip and snap collar details that make the style recognizable.

Neither is more "correct." The cropped cut leans closer to the jacket's 1920s motorcycling origins; the classic length is the more practical everyday choice if you're layering it over bulkier pieces. Both are available across our collection.

It's worth knowing why a biker jacket looks the way it does, because every signature detail started as a solution to an actual riding problem, not a styling decision.

The diagonal zip lets the leather overlap in a double layer down the front — better wind protection than a straight zipper, and it keeps the hardware off-center so it doesn't catch or dig in when the wearer leans forward. The snap collar does similar work: worn open for a relaxed look, or snapped closed across the throat for added wind protection on colder days. The belted waist, meanwhile, cinches the silhouette and was originally a practical way to seal out drafts while riding — now it's just as often used purely for shape.
