Wool is the oldest insulating material in outerwear and remains technically competitive with synthetic alternatives because of a property built into the fiber itself. Each individual wool fiber has a natural crimp, a microscopic waviness, that causes adjacent fibers to interlock rather than pack flat when pressed together. That interlocking creates air pockets within the fabric that trap warm air against the body. This is why a wool jacket insulates even without synthetic fill inside quilted baffles: the fabric structure itself is the insulation.

Merino, Boiled Wool, and Plaid Weave: What Each Construction Means

Three wool constructions dominate the men's wool jacket category, each with distinct characteristics.

Merino wool comes from a specific breed of sheep known for producing a fine, soft fiber diameter. Finer fiber means less surface texture and significantly less of the scratchiness associated with coarser wool. Merino jackets are the most comfortable to wear next to the skin or over a single light layer and are the most appropriate for smart-casual and slightly dressed-up contexts.

Boiled wool is a felted fabric created by agitating and heating wool in water until the fibers shrink and matt together into a dense, smooth surface. The resulting material is heavier and more wind-resistant than a standard woven wool, does not fray at cut edges, and holds its shape without internal structure or lining. Boiled wool jackets are typically the warmest and most structured in the wool jacket category without additional filling.

Plaid and herringbone weaves describe the pattern created by the interlacing of warp and weft threads in the loom. These are structural patterns woven into the fabric itself, not printed on the surface, which means they are permanent and do not fade or wear away in the way a surface print does.

Wool's Natural Properties Beyond Warmth

Wool has two additional properties relevant to jacket construction that synthetic materials replicate only partially.

Natural water resistance: Raw wool fiber contains lanolin, an oil produced by sheep that is partially retained through most processing. This residual lanolin gives untreated wool a degree of natural water repellency. Light rain beads on a wool jacket rather than immediately soaking in. This is not waterproofing, but it is more inherent moisture management than most synthetic fabrics provide without a DWR coating.

Breathability: Wool fiber naturally absorbs and releases moisture as relative humidity changes, which means a wool jacket manages the moisture from perspiration without creating the clammy, sealed feeling that non-breathable synthetic shells produce under exertion.

Caring for a Wool Jacket

Wool is a protein fiber and responds poorly to the conditions that protein breaks down under: sustained heat, alkaline chemicals, and mechanical agitation.

Most wool jackets should be dry cleaned rather than machine washed. Even "machine washable" wool can shrink or felt in a standard household cycle because domestic washing machines apply more mechanical agitation than the process tolerates consistently. If the care label specifies dry clean, follow it.

Between cleans, hang the jacket on a wide padded hanger to let it air out and allow any absorbed moisture to release. Brush the surface gently with a soft garment brush to remove surface lint and dust. For minor pilling, a fabric pill shaver removes the pills without damaging the surrounding fabric.
