A full-length shearling coat extends to the mid-calf or ankle, providing the maximum possible coverage and warmth. A 3/4 length coat ends between the thigh and the knee, splitting the difference between the full coverage of a floor-grazing coat and the mobility of a jacket. A hip-length shearling coat sits at or slightly below the hip, closer to what most people think of as a longer jacket proportion. Within the coat category it represents the most casual and most mobile option.

Caring for a Shearling Coat

Shearling coats require specialist care, and the cost of getting this wrong is higher than with most outerwear because the material cannot be restored once it has been damaged by heat or the wrong cleaning process.

For routine maintenance, spot clean surface marks on the leather exterior with a slightly damp cloth and address any matting in the wool interior by gently brushing with a soft suede brush in one direction. If the coat gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally at room temperature. Never apply direct heat: a radiator, a hairdryer, or direct sunlight will cause the leather to stiffen unevenly and potentially crack as it dries, which is not reversible.

For deeper cleaning, a specialist experienced with leather and shearling is necessary. Standard dry cleaners use processes suited to fabric, not to the combined requirements of tanned hide and natural wool, and the result can permanently damage both materials.

Store the coat hung on a wide padded hanger in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. A breathable cloth garment bag for seasonal storage is appropriate. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew in the dense wool over time.
