Suede is made from the underside of animal hide, giving it a softer, velvety texture and a matte finish. It tends to feel lighter and more pliable compared to smooth leather, which is thicker and more structured. Suede has a vintage, bohemian or relaxed elegance, while smooth leather often gives a more rugged or polished look.

A suede jacket should fit so that the shoulders align naturally, the sleeves reach your wrists (even when arms move), and the body allows for layering without looking bulky. Because suede is soft and flexible, it molds a bit over time, so it’s often better if the initial fit is comfortably snug instead of loose. Also, consider the length (cropped, hip, or long) depending on your style and what you’ll wear it over.

Suede requires more gentle care than smooth leather. Regular brushing with a suede brush helps remove dust and keep the nap (the soft raised surface) looking fresh. If it gets wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat or sun, then gently brush to restore texture. Use a suede protector spray before first wear and reapply every few months, especially on high-contact areas like collars and cuffs. For stains or deep dirt, consider professional cleaning.

Suede is best suited for mild, dry weather. It’s less ideal in rainy, snowy, or very humid weather because moisture can stain it and damage the texture. For daily wear, if you expect moisture or rough use, choose suede with protective finishes and avoid letting water sit on the surface. Meanwhile, suede performs well as a style piece for transitional seasons (spring/fall) or indoor use. As with any special material, how you use it, protect it, and store it will determine how long it stays good.
